5 Reasons AYSO Parents are Awesome

As an AYSO parent, you have a special role in contributing to the development of your soccer player(s). Through your encouragement and good example, you can help assure the effectiveness of the AYSO program and more importantly, help your son or daughter have a wonderful soccer experience.

AYSO is famous not only for our great volunteer coaches and referees, but also our supportive and positive parents. As the fall season approaches, we wanted to remind you all why you’re special!

1. You Support Your Child
You support your child by giving encouragement and showing an interest in his or her team. You help your child work toward skill improvement and good sportsmanship in every game. With your guidance, your child learns that hard work and an honest effort are often more important than victory. That’s why AYSO players are winners, even in defeat.

2. You’re Always Positive
Parents are not participants on their child's team. However, by being a positive role model, you do contribute to the success experienced by your son or daughter. You applaud good plays by your child's team and by the opposing team - making your team's sidelines a great example for other teams.

3. You’re Enthusiastic and Supportive
Your AYSO kids set their own goals and play the game for themselves. Because you don’t impose your own standards and goals on your child, him/her doesn’t have the heavy burden of having to win games to feel good about themselves. Did you know surveys reveal that 72 percent of children would rather play for a losing team than ride the bench for a winner? Your enthusiasm and support definitely does not go unnoticed.

4. You Reinforce Positive Behavior
The best way to help your child achieve goals and reduce the natural fear of failure is through positive reinforcement. No one likes to make a mistake. When your child does make one, you recognize that he or she is still learning, you encourage your child's efforts and point out the good things your child accomplished. Positive reinforcement is key!

5. You Let Coaches Coach and Refs Ref
Coaches and referees are usually parents, just like you. They volunteer their time to help make your child's youth soccer experience a positive one. They need your support, too. The fact that you don’t coach from the sidelines or yell at the referees helps these volunteers feel appreciated and also sets a great example for your child. Keep it up!
